Wiregrass—Nearly four years after the murder of Melanie Amber Dorrill, investigators say the case remains active and are urging anyone with information to come forward as a renewed effort to solve the homicide gains momentum.
Dorrill, 37, was found dead on Oct. 4, 2022, in the 1800 block of County Road 117 near Ariton. An autopsy later determined she had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
During a 2026 press conference, investigators announced they have developed a person or persons of interest in the case. However, authorities said additional information is needed before arrests can be made.
Law enforcement officials believe there are individuals within the community who may possess information that could help advance the investigation and ultimately lead to charges.
In an effort to generate new leads, Gov. Kay Ivey has increased the reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible to $10,000.
The case remains a priority for investigators, who continue to review evidence and pursue tips. Authorities have emphasized that even seemingly minor details could prove critical in building a prosecutable case.
Governor Kay Ivey authorized an increase in the reward offered that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible. In her proclamation, Ivey said, “Whereas the case remains unsolved, and circumstances surrounding the crime indicate every effort should be made in the pursuit of justice for this victim…I, Kay Ivey, Governor of Alabama…do hereby increase the existing $5,000 reward to $10,000.”
The Chronicle spoke with the victim’s mother, Joan, and she expressed gratitude for the governor’s increasing the reward.
“I’m very grateful she increased the reward and hope anyone with information will come forward so we can seek closure after years of waiting.”
“There are many options. If the informant wants to remain anonymous, they can,” she added.
Alabama Cold Case Advocacy recently renewed public attention on Dorrill’s homicide, highlighting the case in a June 18 social media post and encouraging anyone with knowledge of the crime to contact authorities.
“Melanie deserves justice. Her family deserves answers,” the organization stated. “Even the smallest detail could help move this case forward.”

Investigators hope the increased reward and renewed public awareness will encourage someone with information to come forward and help bring closure to Dorrill’s family.
The investigation remains ongoing.
