The Carroll Eagles faced a tough time defending the State Champion Montgomery Catholic squad Friday night in Ozark, and the Knights showed why they’re one of the top teams in the region, shutting out Carroll 42-0.
Catholic got on the board early, striking with 8:52 left in the first quarter on a 9-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was good, giving the Knights a 7-0 lead. After Carroll’s first drive stalled, Catholic quickly added to its lead with a 5-yard touchdown run to go up 14-0.
The Knights pulled away in the second quarter, scoring three times through the air and on defense. First came a 34-yard touchdown pass at the 8:04 mark to make it 21-0. Then, with 3:50 left in the half, Catholic connected on a 29-yard touchdown pass. Just 20 seconds later, the Knights’ defense extended the lead with a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown. All extra points were good, giving Catholic a commanding 35-0 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Catholic added one more score on a 3-yard touchdown run with 2:33 remaining to push the margin to 42-0. The two teams traded possessions the rest of the way with no further scoring.
With the loss, Carroll falls to 0-7 on the season. The Eagles will look to bounce back on the road next Friday, October 10, when they travel to Greenville for another key Class 5A, Region 2 matchup.
