April 12 through April 18 has been officially recognized as Alabama Extension Week, a time to celebrate the impact of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and its role in strengthening communities across the state.
Local officials and Extension leaders say the week serves as an opportunity to highlight more than a century of service connecting research-based knowledge with everyday needs.
“For more than 110 years, Alabama Extension has served as a bridge between university research and everyday life,” said Megan Jones of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.
Through partnerships with Auburn University, Alabama A&M University, and Tuskegee University, Extension programs deliver practical, research-backed information directly to farmers, families, business owners, educators, and community leaders.
Jones said that the mission translates into real, everyday benefits for residents across Alabama.
“It means having access to trusted, practical information and programs that make a real difference in daily life,” she said.
Wide range of local services
Extension offices provide support in several key areas that directly impact communities, including agriculture, family wellness, and youth development.
Agriculture and natural resources programs assist farmers and landowners in improving productivity, sustainability, and profitability. Home gardening and landscaping services offer guidance on lawn care, pest control, and horticulture education, including programs such as Master Gardeners.
Family and consumer sciences programs focus on nutrition, food safety, financial management, and healthy living, while youth development initiatives, including 4-H, aim to build leadership skills and confidence through hands-on learning experiences.
Jones emphasized that Extension’s strength lies in its local presence.
“Extension is uniquely local,” she said. “Extension offices are right here in the community, serving as a resource where you can get real answers from people who understand local needs and challenges.”
Celebrating impact across Alabama
Alabama Extension Week is intended not only to recognize the organization but also to highlight the people and outcomes behind its work.
That includes farmers improving their operations, families adopting healthier habits, and young people gaining confidence through 4-H programs. It also recognizes the role of volunteers and community partnerships in expanding Extension’s reach.
As part of the celebration, residents are encouraged to learn more about programs available in their area, engage with Alabama Extension on social media, and explore resources through its website.
“We are proud to serve this community and grateful for your continued support,” Jones said. “Together, we are building a stronger, more informed, and more resilient Alabama.”
