HOOVER—The Alabama High School Athletic Association, other members of the Alabama news media community, family, and friends are all mourning the loss of longtime AHSAA TV Network sideline reporter Christina Chambers, who passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the age of 38.
Authorities in Hoover confirmed that Chambers and her husband were found dead inside their home in an incident police believe was a tragic murder-suicide. Investigators reported that the couple’s three-year-old child was found unharmed inside the residence.
Chambers had been a familiar and trusted presence on AHSAA broadcasts since 2015, covering the Super 7 Football Championships and State Basketball Finals. Known for her professionalism, warmth, and passion for sports storytelling, she was widely respected by colleagues, coaches, and viewers across the state.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Christina’s family, especially her young son, as well as her extended family of TV friends and viewers throughout Alabama,” said AHSAA Executive Director Heath Harmon. “Her impact on the AHSAA TV Network and her dedication to teaching broadcasting to students will be felt for many years. She was truly part of the AHSAA family.”
Neighbors in Hoover described Chambers as kind, compassionate, and deeply devoted to her child. One neighbor said she was an outstanding athlete and a caring presence in the community, but above all, an exceptional mother whose loss has been deeply felt throughout the neighborhood.
Chambers was also remembered fondly by former colleagues in the television industry. She previously worked as a sports reporter for WBRC Fox 6 in Birmingham, where she left a lasting impression on the newsroom.
“Christina was a valued member of our newsroom and a beloved colleague whose warmth, humor, and passion for sports made a difference every day,” a WBRC spokesperson said in a statement. “She was an accomplished journalist and athlete who brought energy, professionalism, and genuine care to her work. She took great pride in her connection to UAB, high school sports, and the communities she served.”
A graduate of Cullman High School, Chambers was a standout track athlete before earning a scholarship to the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She competed in track and cross-country at UAB and later earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
Her broadcasting career began at WLTZ NBC 38 in Columbus, Georgia, followed by a move to WAKA TV 8 in Montgomery. She later joined WBRC 6 in Birmingham and also worked with Comcast Sports Southeast in Atlanta, where she covered Auburn University athletics and served as a sideline reporter for high school football broadcasts.
In addition to her on-air work, Chambers was passionate about mentoring the next generation of broadcasters, teaching at Thompson High School, and encouraging students interested in media careers. She also freelanced with Raycom Media and the AHSAA, continuing her sideline reporting and halftime hosting duties through the 2025 season.
