An Alabama student has been identified among the victims of a deadly shooting at Brown University during final exam week.
Church leaders at the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham confirmed Sunday morning that Ella Cook, a member of their parish, was killed in the Saturday night shooting on the Rhode Island campus. During services, clergy described Cook as a deeply faithful and compassionate young woman who was a positive presence both in Birmingham and within the Brown University community.
Authorities said the shooting occurred inside a classroom located within the university’s engineering building. At least two students were killed, and multiple others were injured in the shooting.
A person in their 20s has been taken into custody as a person of interest. As of Sunday evening, no charges have been filed. Providence police officials stated the investigation is moving rapidly, but they are releasing limited details to avoid jeopardizing potential prosecution.
