FORT RUCKER, Ala. — A former U.S. Army trainee has been sentenced to more than 20 years in military confinement after pleading guilty to the 2023 killing of a fellow soldier inside the barracks at Fort Rucker.
Army Pvt. Brian Jones Jr., 24, entered a guilty plea to unpremeditated murder under Article 118(2) of the Uniform Code of Military Justice in the death of Pvt. Abdul N. Latifu, 21, of the Bronx, New York. The court-martial concluded on Jan. 29, 2026.
Military officials said the fatal incident occurred shortly before 11:40 a.m. on Jan. 10, 2023, inside the barracks at Fort Rucker. At the time, both soldiers were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 13th Aviation Regiment, 1st Aviation Brigade, part of the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence. Jones was enrolled in advanced individual training for air traffic control operators.
Jones was sentenced to 247 months of confinement, the equivalent of 20 years and nearly six months. The sentence also includes reduction in rank to E-1, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and a dishonorable discharge from the U.S. Army.
Lt. Col. William Wicks, a prosecutor with the Headquarters Army Office of Special Trial Counsel, said the case marked a significant step toward accountability.
“The murder occurred just over three years ago, and it has been a long road to justice, but today is the day that Pvt. Jones is finally held accountable for taking the life of PV2 Latifu,” Wicks said.
Wicks said Latifu was remembered not only for his military service, but for his role within his family.
“PV2 Latifu was not only a soldier; he was also a beloved son, uncle and brother,” he said.
While acknowledging that the conviction and sentence cannot undo the loss, Wicks said the outcome may help provide some measure of closure for Latifu’s loved ones.
“While the conviction and sentence cannot reverse the tragic loss of PV2 Latifu, we can only hope that today’s outcome is the first step in allowing PV2 Latifu’s family to begin to heal,” Wicks said.
Wicks also thanked investigators with the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division’s Southern Field Office for their work throughout the case, citing their support from the initial investigation through prosecution.
Jones will serve his sentence at the U.S. Army Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
