Seven individuals were arrested following a two-day undercover operation targeting human trafficking and child exploitation in Dale County, according to the Dale County Sheriff’s Office.
The operation, dubbed “Operation Nutcracker” by authorities, was conducted online and focused on identifying individuals seeking to engage in illegal sexual activity with minors in exchange for money. Authorities say the suspects believed they were communicating with and arranging meetings with underage girls.
Sheriff Mason Bynum said the operation was intentionally designed to send a strong message to offenders throughout Dale County and the Wiregrass region.
“My hope is that this operation sends a clear message there is no safe place in Dale County or anywhere in the Wiregrass for those who seek to traffic or exploit our children,” Bynum said. “These efforts require strong coordination and teamwork across agencies, and when we work proactively together, offenders have nowhere to hide.”
As a result of the operation, seven men were charged with human trafficking–related offenses. The names of those arrested were officially released during a press conference and include:
- Hunter Erik Bedsole
- Emmett Reed Jones
- David Michael Sanders
- Justin Travis Westbrook
- Gregory Lewis
- Jessie Barefield
- Timothy Smith

Before the official release of names, the Dale County Chronicle investigated and confirmed that several individuals had been booked into the Dale County Jail on Human Trafficking in the First Degree charges.
The investigation was led by the Dale County Sheriff’s Office under the direction of Sheriff Bynum and the DCSO Investigation Unit, with assistance from multiple agencies, including the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the FBI, the Alabama Fusion Center, and local law enforcement agencies from Enterprise, Dothan, Ozark, and Coffee County.
Bynum credited the success of the operation to interagency cooperation, specifically acknowledging assistance from Captain David Hall with ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation Region B, who helped with on-scene coordination.
“This operation was truly a total team effort,” Bynum said.
Investigator Steve Brown with the Dale County Sheriff’s Office said the arrests provide reassurance to the community, especially during the holiday season.
“This operation was a huge success,” Brown said. “As we approach the holidays, we can rest a bit easier knowing that some of those who would subject our children to evil are being held accountable.”
Captain David Hall echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the broader message behind Operation Nutcracker.
“Operation Nutcracker sends a clear message — if you exploit people, especially children, we will find you,” Hall said. “This operation was about protecting the vulnerable and holding offenders accountable, no matter where they hide.”
The Dale County Sheriff’s Office stated it remains committed to proactive enforcement, strong interagency partnerships, and protecting the most vulnerable members of the community. Additional details related to the investigation and court proceedings are expected to be released as the cases move forward.
