The City of Ozark celebrated a major moment in public safety leadership as Jason Maertens was officially sworn in as Fire Chief and Director of Public Safety, joined by family members and Mayor Charles Ward during a ceremony at City Hall. The event also honored the promotion of Michael Bryan as the city’s new Police Chief.
For Maertens, the appointment marks the culmination of a 24-year career that began with the Ozark Fire Department, where he worked his way up through the ranks with a goal of one day leading the agency. Colleagues and city officials highlighted his reputation as a humble, steady, and team-focused leader who consistently credits the department’s firefighters, EMTs, and support staff for every success.
City officials noted that Maertens has helped guide significant progress within Ozark Fire and EMS, and expressed confidence that he will continue advancing that work as he steps into his expanded responsibilities overseeing public safety operations citywide.
The ceremony also recognized newly promoted Police Chief Michael Bryan, whose leadership and service within the Ozark Police Department were celebrated by fellow officers, city staff, and residents in attendance. Most recently, Bryan served as interim police chief after Ward took a leave of absence to run for mayor, a position to which he was ultimately elected.
City leaders described the joint event as a meaningful celebration of dedication and commitment to the community, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Ozark’s public safety agencies.
