ENTERPRISE–The story that captivated the nation has ended in tragedy. Authorities announced Monday that the mother of the 3-year-old has been formally charged with capital murder and abuse of a corpse following an investigation that began after the child was reported missing last month.
During a press conference, the chief of the Enterprise Police Dept. said the child’s mother, Adrienne Reid, has been charged following what investigators described as weeks of evidence gathering and investigative work.
“Through the careful and methodical work of investigators, we have reached the heartbreaking and horrific conclusion that her mother, her caretaker, the one who should have been there to keep her safe, willfully murdered Genesis and placed her in a duffel bag and discarded her in a dumpster,” Moore said.
The investigation began Feb. 16 when Adrienne Reid reported that her daughter was missing from their apartment on Apache Drive in Enterprise. Detectives later determined the report was false, and Reid was arrested the following day on a charge of false reporting to law enforcement authorities, a Class C felony.
According to Moore, investigators determined that Genesis had not been seen since Christmas Day. Detectives later obtained surveillance footage from a nearby residence showing Reid walking toward the apartment complex dumpster with a rolling duffel bag around 11:30 p.m. Two days later, additional footage reportedly shows her returning to the dumpster carrying toys and other items believed to belong to the child.
Officials said the announcement came on what would have been Genesis Reid’s third birthday.
“Today is an especially heartbreaking day for our community,” Moore said. “The loss of a child, the most precious and innocent members of our society, is something that cannot be ignored and will never be forgotten.”
Search efforts are now focused on locating the child’s remains in the area landfills.
The sheriff of the county said investigators have analyzed landfill operations and equipment GPS data to identify where the dumpster’s contents were likely deposited.
Officials have narrowed the potential search area to roughly 200 feet by 100 feet and estimate the remains could be buried 8 to 10 feet deep in refuse.
“I need the public to understand that this will not be an easy or fast search,” Byrd said, explaining that the dumpster was collected Dec. 26, compacted in a garbage truck, taken to a distribution facility where it was compacted again, and later transported to the landfill where it was processed with bulldozers and compacting equipment.
Byrd said the search will be methodical and could take up to 10 weeks or longer. Specialists from the area are assisting investigators in planning the search operation.
The district attorney for the , said Reid is expected to appear before the court later this week for an initial court appearance on the new charges.
Tarbox said prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty.
“The evidence shows that Adrienne Reid killed her daughter, literally threw her in the trash, and then engaged in a 53-day campaign of deceit, lies, manipulation, and destruction of evidence before she finally reported her missing on Feb. 16,” Tarbox said.
The mayor of the city called the case a tragedy that has deeply affected the community.
“From the very start, our thoughts and hearts have been with Genesis, and we have lifted this little girl in our prayers,” Cooper said. “Now it is time to see justice done for her and to bring some measure of peace and closure to everyone who has cared so deeply.”
Moore said the investigation has involved approximately 8,000 combined working hours from law enforcement agencies across several states. Investigators executed 37 search warrants, pursued 97 investigative leads within the department, and analyzed more than five terabytes of digital and physical evidence.
Leads in the case have taken investigators to Illinois, Texas, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and across Alabama. At times, more than 75 law enforcement officers from multiple agencies were involved in the investigation.
While the search for Genesis Reid’s remains continues, Moore said the community should remember the child whose life was lost.
“This investigation cannot undo this senseless and heartbreaking loss,” Moore said, adding that he finds comfort in his faith and the belief that Genesis is now “in a place far greater than anything this world could offer.”
