Communities are gearing up to hold Memorial Day ceremonies and are inviting Wiregrass residents to join them on Monday, May 25. The purpose of the ceremonies is to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to the United States.
Midland City will hold its Memorial Day ceremony at Sunset Memorial Park at 10 am Monday. This ceremony will feature patriotic music by Trey Merritt and Hi-Def, and the public is encouraged to attend. Sunset Memorial Park is located at 1700 Barrington Road, Midland City, AL 36350.
Meanwhile, a planned Memorial Day ceremony at Daleville Memorial Gardens has been canceled due to forecasted severe weather, according to Southeast Alabama American Veterans.
The event had been scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday and was set to include participation from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, AMVETS, and Battle Buddies Veterans Empowered. Organizers had also announced that “Taps” would be performed by talent from the Daleville High School band.
In a statement announcing the cancellation, organizers urged residents to still take time to reflect on the meaning of Memorial Day.
“Please take a moment to remember those who have given their all,” the statement read. “Remember their families. Honor them by being worthy of the price they paid for our freedom.”
The organization also reminded the public that Memorial Day is distinct from other patriotic observances.
“Memorial Day is not Veterans Day. It is not a celebration of service,” the statement continued. “It is something heavier, something sacred. It is the day we stop … and we remember.”
The message further emphasized the sacrifices made not only by fallen service members but also by the loved ones they left behind.
“They gave everything,” the statement concluded. “The very least we can do is never forget.”
Community members are encouraged to attend the ceremony of their choice and to spend Memorial Day reflecting on the sacrifices made by America’s fallen heroes and their families.
