The Dale County Sheriff’s Office is offering local youth a unique opportunity to learn firsthand about the important work of first responders through its newly launched Sheriff’s S.T.A.R. Program.
In announcing the program, the Sheriff’s Office said, “The Dale County Sheriff’s Office is excited to introduce the Sheriff’s S.T.A.R. Program (Students Training Alongside Responders)!”
According to the announcement, “This hands-on program gives children an inside look at the world of first responders through interactive activities, demonstrations, teamwork, and real-life skills.”
The Sheriff’s S.T.A.R. Program is designed to provide children with an engaging and interactive experience while teaching practical safety skills, building confidence, and inspiring future leaders. Participants will learn about the roles of first responders, basic first aid and safety awareness, how to recognize emergencies, teamwork and communication skills, and how deputies, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and dispatchers work together during emergencies.
The three-day program will be held June 29 through July 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. While the program is based through the Dale County Sheriff’s Office at 113 W. Reynolds St. in Ozark, officials noted that the location may change daily depending on the topic being taught.
Program highlights will include demonstrations from local first responders, patrol car and equipment showcases, age-appropriate activities, and a certificate of completion for each participant.
The program is open to children ages 11 and 12. The registration fee is $20, and space is limited.
Sherry Stabler with the Dale County Sheriff’s Office spoke with the Chronicle about the upcoming S.T.A.R. program, and she said the sheriff’s office may plan to expand the program in the future so more children can learn and become “aware of the requirements of becoming first responders and being a part of our Junior Deputies.”
Stabler also pointed out the different benefits the program will offer to participants, adding, “We believe if we foster an understanding and interest in what first responders do, it will show the children of our community opportunities for future occupations.”
The Sheriff’s Office encouraged parents to register as soon as possible, stating, “Spots are limited, so get your child signed up today.”
