DALEVILLE—The Daleville City Schools Board of Education is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, March 18, at 4:30 p.m. in the board meeting room at the Daleville City Schools central office, located at 626 N. Daleville Ave.
During the meeting, board members are expected to conduct their regular monthly business, including approval of the meeting agenda, review of the superintendent’s report, and discussion of the school system’s financial reports.
In addition to routine matters, the board is also expected to consider several items of new business. Among the topics anticipated on the agenda are personnel actions, the possible sale of surplus property, and the adoption of new social studies textbooks.
The choice of new textbooks for the system’s social studies classes is of particular interest to several parents and education advocates because certain special interest groups, including Eagle Forum of Alabama, Moms for Liberty, and others, have been pushing school boards as well as the State Board of Education to adopt textbooks that censor certain aspects of history while presenting a historical view that aligns with their political agendas, even pushing for the adoption of books that have not been rigorously vetted by experts and instead pushing a politically-motivated retelling of history and social studies, and, in many cases, even removing historical lessons on topics with which the groups disagree.
At this time, we have no evidence that any groups have tried to influence the DCS BOE. However, we have reached out to the Daleville Board of Education to request more information on the textbooks up for consideration and to learn if any groups have tried to influence their decision, and we will provide an update once we receive a response.
School Board meetings are open to the public and held on the third Wednesday of every month at 4:30 PM, unless otherwise specified.
