Police Investigate Shooting at Wiregrass Commons Mall; One Person Hospitalized

DOTHAN, Ala. — More details have been released following a shooting in Dothan on Sunday afternoon.
Dothan police are investigating a shooting that took place Sunday afternoon at the Wiregrass Commons Mall, leaving one man hospitalized.
According to Lt. S. Owens, the incident occurred just before 4 p.m. near the end of the mall closest to the Spirit Halloween store. Officers responded after reports of gunfire and arrived to find a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the upper body. He was given medical aid at the scene before being transported to a local hospital. His condition has not yet been released.
As additional officers arrived, dispatchers received numerous 911 calls from mall employees sheltering inside their stores. Police organized teams to clear the mall in phases, ensuring that all workers and shoppers were safely evacuated. Officers conducted three separate sweeps due to the size of the mall and confirmed that no suspects remained inside.
Investigators later determined the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute between several individuals. The altercation reportedly began inside a barbershop in the mall when multiple people entered and began making threats toward a man who was getting a haircut. The confrontation escalated when guns were drawn, and shots were exchanged between both sides.
One of the individuals who entered the barbershop was struck by gunfire. No other people involved or bystanders were injured, police said.
Lt. Owens emphasized the seriousness of the incident, especially given its location. “Any time someone is injured by gunfire is concerning,” Owens stated. “However, the place where this shooting took place was especially concerning. Citizens expect to be safe at places in and around the City of Dothan while shopping with their families. The Dothan Police Department will find those responsible for this chaos and hold them accountable.”
Police say the investigation remains active as they work to identify and locate all individuals involved. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
