ENTERPRISE — An Enterprise man is facing multiple theft charges as authorities continue to investigate a broader case involving alleged child exploitation, according to court records and law enforcement officials.
Joshua Allen Garzarek, 42, was arrested Monday and charged with three counts of theft tied to incidents at a local Walmart store. Investigators allege Garzarek stole approximately $5,700 in merchandise over several months, including more than $3,600 worth of items taken in a single day. Records also indicate he had previously been charged in a separate theft case involving the same retailer.
The arrest comes amid a wider investigation into suspected child exploitation. Law enforcement sources reported that officers executed a search at Garzarek’s residence after receiving tips from a group that monitors internet crimes involving explicit material. During the search, authorities seized electronic devices as part of the ongoing probe.
While no charges related to child pornography had been filed as of Tuesday, officials confirmed the investigation remains active. In addition to the theft charges, court records show Garzarek has also been charged with being a violent felon in possession of a firearm.
Authorities have released limited details due to the sensitive nature of the case, noting that investigations involving potential exploitation of minors are handled with strict confidentiality to protect victims and preserve evidence. Additional charges could be filed as digital evidence is reviewed.
Garzarek has a lengthy criminal history dating back more than a decade. In 2012, he was convicted of setting fire to Poplar Head Bar and Grill, a downtown Dothan restaurant, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. He also received additional sentences that year for obstruction of justice and possession of a controlled substance, bringing his total sentence to 18 years.
Despite the sentence, records show Garzarek was released from prison in 2015, well before completing his full term. In 2020, he was again arrested and charged with stealing approximately $4,000 worth of copper wiring from a telecommunications company, though that case was later dropped.
During his earlier court proceedings, witnesses testified that Garzarek experienced mental health issues following his service in the Iraq War, and he underwent a psychiatric evaluation.
The current investigation remains ongoing, and authorities say more information will be released as it becomes available. The Enterprise Police Department expressed gratitude to the Dale County Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children unit for providing crucial information in this case.
