GENEVA — A 16-year-old singer from Geneva is headed to Hollywood after earning a coveted golden ticket on Season 24 of American Idol.
Kiera Howell, a sophomore at Geneva High School, secured her spot during the Feb. 9 audition episode, where she delivered a powerful rendition of “Don’t Tread on Me” by We the Kingdom. The Christian rock anthem showcased her commanding vocals and confident stage presence.
During the performance, Howell sustained a long, high note that drew an immediate reaction from the judges. They praised the moment, with one joking that she may have rivaled a record for holding a note, while also advising her to be strategic with her vocal delivery as the competition intensifies.
The judging panel applauded Howell’s vocal strength and her commitment to performing faith-centered music. After deliberation, she received three yes votes, officially sending her through to Hollywood Week.
Howell now joins contestants from across the nation as she prepares for the next phase of the competition, where singers face a series of high-pressure performances designed to test their versatility, stamina, and stage presence.
Howell announced on social media, “I’m going to Hawaii! I made it to the top 30 of American Idol. I’m so excited. I’m just so thankful I get this opportunity and for all of you guys, so be sure to watch the show.” Howell’s excitement was palpable and one could tell how much this experience means to her.

Howell is not the first person from the area to appear on a nationally televised singing competition. In 2015, Celeste (Graham) Betton, a 2006 graduate of Carroll High School in Ozark, competed on The Voice. As a member of Team Pharrell, Betton advanced through multiple rounds before being eliminated during the Live Playoffs after performing “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” alongside teammate Mark Hood.
Pharrell Williams praised Betton during her run on the show, saying, “Celeste, your choice of notes is like literally listening to vocal Cirque du Soleil … the first time you guys rehearsed, you made Missy [Elliott] cry.”
Following her appearance on The Voice, Betton, who earned an English degree from Troy University, released an album titled Honestly, featuring gospel themes blended with soul and R&B influences. Betton, who has also worked as an educator and served in her church, has described the album as “Sunday morning church and a little bit of Monday morning vibes.”
A gifted singer and poet, Betton made an impression on the author of this article when both attended Carroll High School. She captivated audiences during a student talent show with a powerful rendition of “Killing Me Softly with His Song” by The Fugees.
When asked what advice she would offer Howell as she navigates Hollywood and American Idol, Betton said, “She needs to remember that it’s a show, and the show and what happens does not define who you are as a person or an artist … at the end of the day, it is still a show. Take it for what it is. Soak up every bit of advice and experience … and when the show is over, then the work really begins.”
Betton added, “Only you can decide what you want this experience to be. It will be determined by what you make it. You will meet many great people. Be nice to everyone and make connections. Be humble and kind, and it is up to you to make the most of the experience. For me, it was fun, and as long as you don’t take the experience too personally and simply let it develop you as an artist, you will excel.”
“It can be an awesome experience … enjoy it while you are there for as long as you are there, and listen to your vocal coach,” she said.
Howell now looks ahead to Hollywood Week, carrying the support of her hometown as she continues her journey on one of television’s biggest stages.
