As Memorial Day weekend begins and summer travel ramps up across the state, Governor Kay Ivey is encouraging veterans and active-duty military personnel to take advantage of Alabama’s Parks for Patriots Program and other outdoor recreation benefits available through the state.
In a Friday announcement, Governor Ivey highlighted the program as a way to thank service members for their sacrifice and dedication to the nation. The Parks for Patriots Program provides free admission to participating Alabama State Parks day-use areas that charge entrance fees, along with discounted lodging at state park facilities.
“Throughout my time in office, supporting our veterans and active military members has been a priority,” Ivey said. “Their selflessness has made our freedom possible. I encourage our veterans and active-duty military members to enjoy Alabama’s beautiful outdoors and know we are forever grateful for their service and sacrifice.”
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has offered the Parks for Patriots Program since the beginning of Ivey’s tenure in 2017. Through the program, veterans and active-duty military personnel receive free admission to participating state park day-use areas, as well as a 15 percent discount on lodging at lodges, cabins, and campgrounds throughout the Alabama State Parks system.
According to the governor’s office, the state’s parks also serve as reminders of the nation’s military history. Many structures still standing in Alabama State Parks were originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, a workforce program that employed many World War I veterans. Cabins, pavilions, and bridges constructed during that era remain in use today.

“Our State Parks and public lands are places for reflection and serenity, and they stand as a tribute to those who have served our great nation,” Blankenship said. “Providing our current and former military members with free admission to Alabama’s beautiful State Parks is just one of the ways we can thank them for their selfless service to the country.”
In addition to the Parks for Patriots Program, Alabama offers several other outdoor recreation benefits for veterans and military personnel. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources provides two special waterfowl hunting days annually for veterans and active-duty service members. Disabled veterans may also qualify for discounted hunting and fishing licenses.
The state additionally waives regular hunting and fishing license requirements for active-duty Alabama residents who are home on leave. Nonresident active-duty military personnel stationed in Alabama may purchase hunting and fishing licenses at resident rates.
Alabamians who wish to support the Parks for Patriots Program can contribute to help fund free admission for veterans and active-duty personnel from all branches of the U.S. military.
