A tragic fire in Houston County on Sunday morning claimed the life of a young child. Officials with the Houston County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) have confirmed the victim was a 4-year-old.
The blaze broke out in a mobile home on the 7100 block of East Highway 84 just before 10 a.m. Sunday morning. When emergency crews arrived, the trailer was fully engulfed in flames.
Authorities said the child was unable to escape and was found deceased inside the home. The child’s identity has not yet been released. Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd arrived at the scene shortly after 1:40 p.m. and is investigating. Officials noted that five children were in the home at the time of the fire, including the victim.
The HCSO and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire. First responders included Pilcher’s Ambulance, the Ashford Police Department, and multiple Houston County fire departments.
