Twenty-five years ago, the nation awoke to the images and painful impact of a day that changed America forever.

Tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 11, communities across the Wiregrass, including Daleville, Fort Rucker, and Enterprise will pause to remember the lives lost on that terrible morning in 2001 and to honor the courage, compassion, service and ultimate sacrifice that emerged from the darkness that followed.

For those who lived through Sept. 11, the memories remain vivid. For a younger generation that knows the attacks primarily through history books and stories from parents and grandparents, the 25th anniversary offers an important opportunity to ensure the lessons of that day are not forgotten.

Here in the Wiregrass, remembrance is more than looking back. It is an opportunity for neighbors to stand together, honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice and recognize the firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical personnel, military members and civilians who answered a call to serve when their country needed them most.

The 25th anniversary also reminds us that while tragedy can divide and devastate, it can also reveal the strength of communities. In the days and years following Sept. 11, Americans witnessed countless acts of courage, kindness and selflessness.

That spirit of remembrance and unity will be reflected at several events throughout the area Friday.

ENTERPRISE

The City of Enterprise will hold its 2026 Patriot Day Memorial Ceremony at 7:30 a.m. Friday at the Wall of Freedom in Johnny Henderson Family Park.

The ceremony is free and open to the public and will honor the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks as well as the first responders who answered the call that day.

A symbolic bell ringing is scheduled for 7:46 a.m.

DALEVILLE

Daleville will also hold its 25th Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony on Friday.

The ceremony will provide an opportunity for members of the community to gather in remembrance of those killed in the attacks and to honor the sacrifices of first responders and others who served in the aftermath.

The event is among the local observances marking the 25th anniversary of one of the most consequential days in modern american history.

FORT RUCKER

A separate remembrance event is also scheduled at Fort Rucker on Friday with the annual Paddle Remembrance. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Fort Rucker lake pavilion.

The event offers participants an opportunity to reflect on the events of Sept. 11 and remember those who lost their lives, as well as the service and sacrifice that followed in the years afterward.

Twenty-five years later, the events of Sept. 11 remain deeply woven into the nation’s history.

For many Americans, the anniversary is a solemn reminder of the lives that were taken. But it is also a reminder of the lives that were lived in service to others, the strangers who became helpers, and the communities that came together when they were needed most.

Across the Wiregrass, Friday’s ceremonies will provide local opportunities for residents to pause, remember and honor that legacy.

A quarter-century later, we remember not only what happened on Sept. 11, 2001, but also how Americans from all realms of life responded by setting aside personal differences, politics, and other much less important things. Instead, Americans stood United and demonstrated extraordinary acts of courage, compassion and an enduring determination to stand together in the face of our darkest hour.
