A North Carolina family is beginning to rebuild after a reunion more than two decades in the making, as a daughter recently came face-to-face with her mother who disappeared while Christmas shopping 24 years ago.
Amanda Smith was just 14 years old when her mother, Michele Hundley Smith, vanished in December 2001 after leaving for a holiday shopping trip and never returning. The disappearance sparked a lengthy search involving multiple agencies, but for years, the case yielded no answers.
That changed in February 2026, when investigators located Michele Hundley Smith alive. Authorities later determined she had left voluntarily, citing personal and domestic issues as factors in her decision to disappear.
The long-awaited reunion took place outside a courthouse in Rockingham County, where Michele Hundley Smith appeared in connection with a decades-old driving while intoxicated charge tied to her disappearance. The emotional moment marked the first time mother and daughter had seen each other in 24 years.
Amanda Smith described the encounter as overwhelming, saying the experience felt “wild” and difficult to process after so many years apart. Despite the circumstances, she embraced her mother, and the two shared an emotional reunion before heading into the courthouse.
While the meeting was brief and took place under less-than-ideal conditions, Amanda Smith expressed hope for the future. She said she plans to support her mother moving forward and is open to rebuilding their relationship, emphasizing that life is too short to hold onto resentment.
Michele Hundley Smith, now in her 60s, still faces legal proceedings related to her failure to appear in court in 2001. However, the focus for the family remains on healing and navigating the complex emotions that come with such a long and unexpected separation.
The case, once considered a mystery, now leaves lingering questions about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, even as it offers a rare outcome—reunion instead of resolution.
