OZARK — A dangerous near-collision involving a large tractor-trailer at the busy intersection of South U.S. Highway 231 and the Walmart Supercenter entrance has raised renewed concerns about traffic safety along one of the city’s most heavily traveled corridors.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 24, at the intersection in front of Walmart Supercenter, where vehicles frequently enter and exit the parking lot while north- and southbound traffic flows along Highway 231.
According to firsthand observations, a tractor-trailer traveling northbound on Highway 231 failed to stop at a red light, nearly causing a three-vehicle collision with motorists attempting to navigate the intersection. The truck, which appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed, continued through the intersection despite the signal.
Witnesses reported that the driver of the tractor-trailer repeatedly sounded the vehicle’s horn as it approached the intersection, seemingly to warn other drivers that it could not stop in time. Several vehicles were forced to brake abruptly or hesitate mid-turn to avoid being struck.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. However, the close call underscores the potential dangers present at the intersection, particularly during periods of heavy traffic.
The author of this article was among the motorists directly involved in the near collision and observed the sequence of events unfold in real time.
This intersection, which serves as a primary access point to the Walmart Supercenter and surrounding businesses, experiences a high volume of turning traffic throughout the day. Incidents like this highlight the importance of driver awareness and adherence to traffic signals, especially for large commercial vehicles that require greater stopping distances.
Motorists traveling along Highway 231 and entering or exiting the Walmart area are urged to use extra caution, remain alert at traffic signals, and be mindful of approaching vehicles that may be unable to stop quickly.
Local authorities encourage anyone who witnesses reckless driving or hazardous conditions to report them to law enforcement to help prevent future incidents.
The Dale County Chronicle has reached out to the Alabama Department of Transportation for comment on numerous reports of safety issues at this intersection, and we also requested records of the complaints and reports filed with the department. As of the publication of this article, we have not heard back from the ADOT. Once we do, we will provide an update.
