A Newton man has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for distributing child sexual abuse material, Acting U.S. Attorney Kevin Davidson announced Thursday. Because this is a federal case, Shawn Patrick Douglas, 41, will not be eligible for parole.
“Douglas repeatedly violated the law and the terms of his supervised release,” Davidson said. “Our office remains committed to holding those who exploit children accountable.”
Court records show Douglas had previously been convicted in 2013 for possession of child sexual abuse material and served 78 months in federal prison. He was placed on lifetime supervised release and required to register as a sex offender.
Despite those conditions, Douglas admitted that in June 2023, he attempted to join an online group producing child sexual abuse material. During that same conversation, he shared a link to an account containing images of a child under 12 being raped and subjected to multiple forms of sexual abuse.
Law enforcement quickly located and arrested Douglas. A petition to revoke his supervised release was granted, and a federal grand jury later indicted him for distribution of child sexual abuse material. He pleaded guilty to the new charge on September 3, 2025. His 25-year sentence includes 23 years for the distribution charge and an additional two years for the supervised release violation.
The case was investigated by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (HSI) Newark Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Tara S. Ratz and J. Patrick Lamb prosecuted the case.
“The safety of children is a top priority,” Davidson added. “We will continue working with our partners to prevent these crimes and bring offenders to justice.”
