OZARK, Ala. — The Ozark City Council held a brief meeting Tuesday evening, June 2, approving a restaurant retail liquor license application and hearing comments from a resident promoting an upcoming community celebration.
Council members met for their regularly scheduled administrative session at 5 p.m. before convening the regular council meeting at 5:30 p.m. The administrative agenda included a review of the evening’s business, comments from city officials, and an opportunity for public input.
During the public comment portion of the administrative meeting, Ozark resident Winnie Frazier addressed the council regarding the city’s upcoming Juneteenth Community Celebration, scheduled for June 19 at the Ozark Amphitheatre in downtown Ozark.
According to information shared during the meeting, the free event will take place from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and will feature food vendors, live music by DJ TK, family activities, games, attractions, door prizes, and community fellowship. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
Food vendors scheduled to participate include Ah Shucks Roasted Corn, Miss P Porkskins, Ruff-n-Stuff, Betty’s Kitchen Food Truck, Kit Kat Kitchen, Jazzy’s Sweet Treats, Philadelphia Water Ice, and Kilow Dip-n-Dots.
Planned attractions include BMP 360 Events, C&J Rolling Video Games of Dothan, OFF the Wallz Odd Ballz, a Corvette Club display, the Spyder Club, fun slides, bounce houses, and a children’s activity area.
During the regular council meeting, council members approved the first and second reading of an Application 020 Restaurant Retail Liquor License submitted by Blue Iguana Ozark LLC, operating as Blue Iguana Mexican Restaurant, located at 1396 S. U.S. Highway 231 in Ozark.
The approval clears the way for the new restaurant to serve liquor at its location in the former El Palacio building on U.S. Highway 231 South. The restaurant is among the newest businesses preparing to open in Ozark.
According to agenda documents, the application was submitted by Blue Iguana Ozark LLC. The listed owners are Jose R. Garcia Jr. of Mathews, Alabama, and Fernando Chavez Jimenez of Cantonment, Florida.
The council also approved minutes from its May 19 regular meeting before taking action on the license request.
Before adjournment, Mayor Charles Ward used his closing comments to encourage residents to attend both the Juneteenth Community Celebration and an upcoming event commemorating America’s 250th birthday.
Ward invited the public to attend Ozark’s Liberty Tree Planting Ceremony on Saturday, June 20, from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Ozark Farmers Market, located at 244 East Avenue N. The ceremony is being held as part of the nationwide observance of the United States’ semiquincentennial, marking 250 years since the nation’s founding.
Mayor Ward spoke with the Dale County Chronicle about the upcoming celebration and highlighted the fun and importance of the community coming together for the event.
“This is going to be a festive time with lots of patriotic music and fun, and I invite everyone to come out and enjoy themselves as we celebrate the nation’s birthday,” Mayor Ward said.
According to Ward, the tree planting is intended to serve as a lasting symbol of freedom and unity. The event will include patriotic reflections, music, and community fellowship, while the farmers’ market will remain open for shopping during the celebration.
