Ozark Fire & Rescue celebrated a major milestone today, December 19, as its newest class of firefighter recruits officially graduated from the department’s Recruit School after completing weeks of rigorous training.
Recruit School is now officially complete, marking the successful conclusion of an intensive program that began on October 6, 2025. Over the course of the past weeks, recruits were challenged physically, mentally, and academically as they prepared to enter the fire service and protect the communities they serve.
The Ozark Fire Department described the program as one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences offered by the department, combining physical conditioning, classroom instruction, and hands-on emergency response training. By graduation day, recruits had developed the foundational skills and teamwork required to function effectively on the fireground, according to Ozark Fire Chief Jason Maertens.
Throughout the program, recruits progressed through a wide range of critical training areas. Early weeks emphasized discipline, expectations, and the fundamentals of fire service life. Instruction included rope and knot work, building construction, fire behavior, and forcible entry techniques. Midway through the academy, recruits focused on Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations, learning to identify, assess, and safely respond to hazmat incidents through classroom instruction and scenario-based exercises.
Training intensified with hands-on work using self-contained breathing apparatuses, where recruits navigated low-visibility obstacle courses designed to simulate real fire conditions. Ladder operations followed, with recruits learning how to properly raise, place, and climb ladders for rescue and elevated operations. The final phase of training focused on hose handling and water flow, one of the most physically demanding components of the academy.
Ozark Fire & Rescue praised the class for its dedication and perseverance throughout the program.
“Congratulations to each graduate. This is a big accomplishment, and it’s only the beginning,” the department said in a statement.
In another message recognizing the milestone, the department added, “Recruit school is officially in the books, and we couldn’t be more proud of this class. Over the past weeks, these recruits put in the work, learned the skills, and showed the dedication it takes to serve their communities. Today was about celebrating that hard work and the commitment they’ve made to the fire service.”
The graduation also highlighted partnerships with neighboring fire departments.
“A huge thank you to East Brewton Fire Department and Eufaula Fire Department for trusting us with your recruits,” Ozark Fire & Rescue said. “We’re honored to be part of their journey and can’t wait to see what they do moving forward. And we are proud and excited to see our Ozark recruits officially start their shifts here with us.”
With training complete and graduation achieved, the recruits now move forward into active service, ready to begin the next chapter of their careers protecting the lives of the residents in our communities.
