OZARK — A routine traffic stop by the Ozark Police Department earlier this month led to the seizure of a large quantity of illegally distilled alcohol and the arrest of one individual, authorities said.
According to the Ozark Police Department, the incident occurred on January 9 when Officer Dylan Griffin, assigned to the department’s Crime Suppression Unit, stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation while it was traveling through the Ozark area. During the stop, Officer Griffin observed multiple containers filled with a clear liquid in plain view inside the vehicle.
Further investigation determined the liquid to be illegally distilled “moonshine.” In total, officers seized approximately 81 gallons of the unlicensed alcohol, an amount far exceeding what is legally permitted under Alabama law.
Police identified the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle as 61-year-old Learndis Hamilton. Authorities said Hamilton was traveling from Florida to an undisclosed destination at the time of the stop. He was taken into custody at the scene.
Officials noted that the possession and transportation of such a large quantity of illegally distilled liquor poses serious public safety and regulatory concerns, as the alcohol had not been subject to oversight or quality controls. Investigators believe the alcohol may have been intended for unlawful distribution.
The case has since been referred to the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board for further investigation and potential additional charges.
Ozark police officials credited the seizure to proactive enforcement efforts and emphasized their continued commitment to preventing illegal activity and protecting public safety throughout the community.
