Residents across southeast Alabama will have an opportunity next week to help influence the future of the state’s transportation network as the Alabama Department of Transportation hosts a regional public planning meeting.
The Southeast Region Transportation Planning Meeting will be held Tuesday, July 8, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Home Builders Association of Alabama, located at 7515 Halcyon Summit Drive in Montgomery.
The meeting is part of ALDOT’s ongoing effort to update the Alabama Statewide Transportation Plan, a long range blueprint that helps guide transportation investments and priorities through 2050.
According to ALDOT, the Statewide Transportation Plan “provides a long range vision for the state’s transportation system and helps guide investment decisions across all modes of transportation.” Officials say public comments gathered during the regional meetings will help shape the next version of the statewide plan.
The transportation plan evaluates Alabama’s existing transportation system while identifying future maintenance needs and potential improvements. It is designed to support economic development, improve mobility, enhance safety, and ensure transportation infrastructure continues meeting the needs of residents and businesses over the coming decades.
The plan covers every major mode of transportation, including highways, public transit, rail systems, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, freight transportation, airports, and waterways.
ALDOT says transportation planning decisions affect communities in numerous ways, including improving road and bridge safety, reducing traffic congestion, strengthening freight movement that supports jobs and businesses, enhancing hurricane evacuation routes, encouraging economic development, expanding opportunities for walking, biking, and transit where appropriate, and preserving existing infrastructure before it deteriorates.
The department emphasized that community participation is essential to the planning process.
“Public input is a critical part of the planning process because it helps ALDOT identify transportation needs, challenges and priorities that may not be evident through data and engineering studies alone,” the department said.
The July 8 meeting will be conducted in an informal open house format, allowing attendees to speak directly with ALDOT representatives, ask questions, discuss concerns, and submit comments regarding transportation needs in their communities.
ALDOT said the public feedback collected during the meeting will help identify transportation priorities and future infrastructure needs throughout the Southeast Region.
The Southeast Region includes Autauga, Barbour, Bullock, Butler, Coffee, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Dallas, Elmore, Geneva, Henry, Houston, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Montgomery, Pike, and Russell counties.
Individuals requiring accommodations because of a disability are encouraged to contact ALDOT at least five business days before the meeting to arrange any necessary assistance.
