OZARK — A railroad crossing on E. Broad Street sustained significant damage on Friday, March 20, following an accident involving a heavy-duty commercial truck, leaving critical safety equipment disabled and exposed.
According to initial observations at the scene, a Kenworth T880 heavy hauler transporting what appeared to be large farming equipment struck the railroad crossing infrastructure on the side of E. Broad Street approaching downtown from the direction of Carroll High School and Dairy King.
The impact knocked down the entire railroad emergency notification system, including the warning lights, crossing arm, and supporting structure. Debris from the collision was scattered near the tracks, and exposed wiring could be seen where the equipment once stood.
The extent of the damage has rendered the crossing’s automated warning system inoperable, creating a potentially hazardous situation for both motorists and pedestrians.
The Dale County Chronicle has reached out to the Ozark Police Department and spoke with Captain Evans.
Evans advises that motorists should “exercise caution when traveling in the area and be vigilant in watching for trains that may cross.”
We also reached out to the Alabama Department of Transportation, which is working with its Railroad Safety Division to gather more information regarding safety measures and an expected timeline for repairs. Updates will be provided as additional details become available. CSX, who operates this railroad, has been notified and will be working on repairs.
Drivers traveling through the area are urged to use extreme caution, particularly when approaching the railroad tracks. Without functioning signals or crossing arms, there is an increased risk when trains are approaching.
Local authorities and railway officials are expected to assess the damage and begin repairs as soon as possible. It is not immediately clear if any injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
Motorists are encouraged to remain alert, obey any temporary traffic controls, and be prepared to stop and look both ways before crossing the tracks until the system is fully restored.
