Concerns about U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville’s residency are expected to trigger a formal ballot challenge as he seeks the Republican nomination for governor, according to multiple state GOP officials. Alabama Republican Party insiders say they expect a challenge focused on Tuberville’s Florida beach home and whether he meets Alabama’s seven-year residency requirement for gubernatorial candidates.
Senior Republicans say claims from Tuberville allies that the party would refuse to hear the challenge are inaccurate. “The Republican Party will absolutely hear a case if one is filed,” one party insider said, noting that party rules require the Candidate Committee to review and hold a hearing on any formal complaint. Party members have urged Tuberville to show proof—particularly state tax filings—that his primary residence has been in Alabama during the last seven years.
A challenge would likely be filed shortly after the January qualifying deadline, when the party verifies candidate eligibility. Some lawmakers are watching the situation closely, with at least one considering joining the race should Tuberville be disqualified. While most believe that outcome is unlikely, they acknowledge it remains possible.
Even without the residency issue, Tuberville’s campaign strategy has frustrated many Republicans. Critics say he has avoided grassroots engagement, skipped local GOP events, and relied mostly on closed-door fundraisers. “He acts like he doesn’t have to answer to anyone—not the party, not the voters,” one insider said. Others argue that an unchallenged, low-visibility campaign is unhealthy for the political process.
Questions about Tuberville’s residency remain the most significant concern. Reports have noted he previously sold all Alabama property in his own name, and the Auburn home he lists as his residence is owned by his wife and son. While living in Florida is not a legal issue for a U.S. senator, it could disqualify him from running for governor. Many Republicans say he could settle the matter by releasing his Alabama tax returns, which he has so far declined to do.
The state GOP has enforced its rules in prior races, including removing several legislative candidates from the ballot in 2022. Some party members are troubled by claims that Tuberville allies believe “the judges have our back” if a dispute arises. “Those insinuations are troubling,” a Republican attorney said.
Several longtime Republicans describe growing irritation with what they view as entitlement within Tuberville’s inner circle. One veteran party member called the moment a test of principle: “We don’t anoint leaders in Alabama. We have elections.”
The Dale County Chronicle contacted Tuberville’s campaign for further comment but has not received a response. He has not publicly addressed concerns over his Florida property or provided proof of Alabama tax filings—an issue central to determining his eligibility.
For many in the GOP, the situation reflects a broader question: whether party rules will be applied consistently, even when the frontrunner is involved. While Tuberville remains the favorite for the nomination, the controversy has raised deeper concerns about accountability and leadership within Alabama’s ruling party.
