COFFEE COUNTY—A roadway improvement project along State Route 87 in Coffee County is set to begin Monday, March 30, according to the Alabama Department of Transportation.
The project will cover a stretch of SR-87 from U.S. Highway 84 to Pea Creek in Elba and will include both resurfacing and shoulder widening aimed at improving driving conditions and roadway safety.
Motorists traveling through the area should expect periodic lane closures and reduced speed limits throughout the duration of the work. Transportation officials are urging drivers to plan, allow extra travel time, and remain alert for workers and equipment in the construction zone.
The approximately $1.2 million project was awarded to Wiregrass Construction Company, Inc., of Dothan, which submitted the lowest bid meeting all project requirements. Construction is expected to continue through the summer of 2026, weather permitting.
The upcoming work follows a similar resurfacing effort completed last year on SR-87 from the Pike County line to Pea Creek, continuing a broader effort to improve infrastructure along the corridor.
