CULLMAN COUNTY —According to reports, a case that began with allegations of a murder-for-hire plot has taken a tragic and unexpected turn after authorities confirmed that both suspects connected to the investigation were found dead in Cullman County.
The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office announced on June 11 that the body of Christopher Robertson was discovered following an extensive search operation. The discovery came one day after authorities located the body of Kristin Slayton near the same area.
Law enforcement agencies had been searching for the pair after receiving information indicating they were in Cullman County. Investigators spent several days combing through difficult terrain and enduring extreme summer temperatures in an effort to locate the suspects.
Robertson and Slayton were previously charged with conspiracy to commit murder in connection with an alleged plot targeting Slayton’s husband, Robert Slayton. The pair was arrested earlier this year and later released on bond while awaiting court proceedings. The pair was also arrested on drug charges.
The investigation came to an unexpected point after both suspects were also linked to an arson case involving a Madison County residence. Authorities reported the fire occurred on June 9 and launched efforts to locate the suspects shortly thereafter.
Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry praised the determination of deputies, investigators, and supporting agencies who participated in the search operation, noting that personnel worked long hours under challenging conditions to bring the search to a conclusion.
Officials have not released the causes of death for either Robertson or Slayton, and investigators have not indicated whether the deaths are connected to the arson investigation. Authorities say the circumstances surrounding both deaths remain under active investigation.
Robert Slayton, whom investigators identified as the intended target of the alleged murder-for-hire scheme, later addressed the developments publicly, expressing sadness over the outcome while acknowledging that many questions remain unanswered.
At this time, law enforcement officials have not announced any additional charges or findings related to the case. Investigators continue working to determine exactly what occurred and whether the deaths are connected to the broader criminal investigation.
As authorities await the results of the ongoing investigation, the case has evolved from an alleged murder-for-hire plot into a mystery that continues to leave investigators and the public searching for answers.
