MIDLAND CITY, Ala. — One point separated the Dale County Warriors from victory Friday night.

In a game where defenses dominated from the opening whistle, the Warriors battled the Headland Rams at home in Midland City, but ultimately came up just short, falling 7-6 in a hard-fought defensive showdown.

The loss snapped Dale County’s perfect start to the season and moved the Warriors to 2-1 on the year.

Dale County entered Friday night’s matchup riding high after opening the season with two convincing victories. The Warriors defeated G.W. Long 41-14 in their season opener before defeating Houston Academy 42-7 on Aug. 27.

But against Headland, points came at a premium.

The opening quarter ended exactly as it began, with neither team able to find the end zone.

The Warriors’ defense made an early impact with an interception, giving Dale County a chance to put the first points on the board. However, the Warriors were unable to capitalize on the takeaway.

Dale County also came up empty on a field goal attempt, leaving the game scoreless as the defensive battle continued.

Headland finally broke through with 1:54 remaining in the second quarter, scoring a touchdown and converting the extra point to take a 7-0 lead.

The Rams carried that advantage into halftime.

For much of the first half, the two teams were essentially evenly matched, with both defenses repeatedly stopping scoring opportunities and keeping the opposing offense out of the end zone.

Then, after halftime, the Warriors finally found their breakthrough.

With 7:39 remaining in the third quarter, Dale County scored a touchdown to cut the Headland advantage to 7-6.

The Warriors had a chance to tie the game with the extra point, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

Suddenly, the entire game came down to a single point.

Headland carried its 7-6 advantage into the fourth quarter, but Dale County’s defense continued to keep the Rams within reach.

With 5:57 remaining in the game, Headland still held the narrow lead.

The Warriors continued fighting for an opportunity to take the lead, but neither defense would surrender another touchdown.

And when the final whistle sounded, the Rams had escaped Midland City with a 7-6 victory.

For Dale County, it was a frustrating ending to a game in which the Warriors’ defense repeatedly gave the offense opportunities to stay within striking distance. The Warriors forced a turnover, limited Headland to just one touchdown and kept the game within one possession throughout.

But in a game decided by the smallest possible margin, every missed opportunity mattered.

The missed field goal and unsuccessful extra-point attempt ultimately left the Warriors needing a touchdown to win rather than a field goal to take the lead.

Dale County falls to 2-1 on the season and will have a chance to bounce back next Friday, Sept. 11, when the Warriors host Straughn.

The matchup will carry some extra excitement as Dale County High School celebrates Homecoming.

After a game decided by just one point, the Warriors will return home looking to turn the page, defend their home field and give the homecoming crowd something to celebrate.
