ENTERPRISE — The Wiregrass Honor Flight is preparing to host “Operation Homecoming,” a patriotic community event designed to recognize and celebrate the service of local veterans, with a special emphasis on those who served during the Vietnam era.
Scheduled for April 24, the event will take place at Enterprise State Community College and will coincide with the return of veterans participating in the Honor Flight program. A second welcome is also expected at Pensacola International Airport, where supporters will gather to greet the veterans upon their arrival. The gathering officially begins at 8:30 p.m., but those who wish to arrive early can arrive starting at 7:30 p.m.
Organizers say the purpose of Operation Homecoming is simple yet meaningful: to ensure that every veteran receives the appreciation and recognition they have earned through their service to the nation.
An organizer of the event pointed out that many Vietnam veterans returned home decades ago to a divided country and, in some cases, were met with indifference or hostility rather than gratitude. Operation Homecoming seeks to change that narrative by creating an atmosphere of unity and appreciation, where the community can come together to honor those who served.
The event is expected to feature a strong show of community support, including patriotic displays, music, and large crowds of residents waving flags and holding signs. Families, students, and civic groups are encouraged to attend and participate in welcoming the veterans home.
The event is part of a network of Honor Flight events that started 21 years ago in the Midwest. Each year, it grows as more chapters join.
Last year, Wiregrass Honor Flight conducted two honor flights that took 25 veterans to D.C. Once there, the veterans were given a tour of the Capitol and important D.C. landmarks, including the World War II, Korea, and Vietnam War Memorials, and other important monuments.

THOSE WHO WISH TO SPONSOR THE EVENT OR FUTURE HONOR FLIGHT EVENTS SHOULD REACH OUT TO THE ORGANIZATION AT THE NUMBER LISTED ABOVE.
