The second round of the AHSAA Baseball Playoffs delivered a strong showing for Wiregrass-area programs, with several teams from Dale, Coffee, Geneva, Houston, Pike, Covington, Henry, and Barbour counties advancing to the next stage. Dale County squads, in particular, continued to headline the region’s success.
In Class 2A, both of Dale County’s representatives handled business in convincing fashion. Ariton (28-7) swept Ranburne, winning 13-7 and 3-0 to secure a 2-0 series victory. The Purple Cats combined timely hitting with steady pitching across both games, continuing a dominant postseason run after their opening-round sweep.
G.W. Long (27-7), located in Skipperville, also advanced with a 2-0 series win over J.U. Blacksher. The Rebels took Game 1 by a 5-2 margin before closing out the series with a tight 2-2 finish in Game 2, securing the sweep under playoff rules. G.W. Long’s consistency on the mound and ability to manufacture runs proved key in the series.
Elsewhere in Class 2A South, Reeltown and Tuscaloosa Academy also advanced, setting up a competitive next round that will include both Ariton and G.W. Long among the contenders.
In Class 3A, Wicksburg (17-10) saw its postseason run come to an end in a hard-fought three-game series against Glenwood. After dropping Game 1 (6-3), Wicksburg responded with a 7-0 win in Game 2 before falling 17-3 in the deciding third game.
Class 4A featured a strong performance from Opp (25-6), which swept Bayside Academy in two close games (6-4, 10-4) to advance. Houston Academy (21-10) also moved on, edging Munford in a competitive series, winning 2-1 in the decisive game after splitting the first two contests.
In Class 5A, the Wiregrass experienced mixed results. Headland (22-10) was eliminated in a tight series against Faith Academy, while Charles Henderson (22-10) fell to Briarwood Christian in two games. Both teams battled but were unable to overcome strong opposition.
Class 6A saw Pike Road (28-10) pushed to three games but ultimately eliminated by Chelsea, losing the series 2-1.
At the state’s highest classification, Class 7A, Wiregrass powers continued to impress. Enterprise (32-5) advanced with a 2-0 series win over Baker, highlighted by a dominant 6-1 performance in Game 2 after a tighter opening contest. Dothan (14-20) also moved on, sweeping Alma Bryant with wins of 5-1 and 4-3, showcasing resilience in close-game situations.
Across the region, the second round underscored the depth of talent in the Wiregrass, with multiple teams advancing and several others exiting after a competitive series. With Ariton and G.W. Long leading the charge for Dale County, local fans will have plenty to follow as the playoffs continue into the quarterfinal round.
Next Round Matchups (Quarterfinals)
Several key matchups now await Wiregrass teams as the playoffs move forward:
In Class 2A, Ariton will face Reeltown in a highly anticipated third-round series, while G.W. Long is set to take on Tuscaloosa Academy. Both matchups present significant challenges but also opportunities for Dale County programs to continue their postseason success.
In Class 4A, Opp advances to meet Oak Grove, while Houston Academy will square off against Bibb County in what is expected to be a competitive series.
In Class 7A, Enterprise moves on to face Daphne, while Dothan will take on Fairhope following their second-round sweep.
With multiple Wiregrass teams still alive, the quarterfinal round promises high-level competition and continued regional pride as programs look to punch their tickets to the state semifinals.
